D013. Metro Bridge
Porto, Portugal
2021
First of all, a bridge has a functional character: it is an element that serves to unite two places, two margins, by nature separated. Once its practical utility is guaranteed - the crossing, safety and protection - the bridge acquires another character, representative, as a monument or symbol of a place. By its scale and significance as a connecting element, the bridge is also a singular and representative construction, a construction that represents the city(ies). Not only a construction that serves as a way to connect two sides, but also an entity in itself, a symbolic construction of the identity of these places, a unique artefact. Building a bridge then presents itself as a double challenge: to reconcile grandeur with beauty, as simply as possible and with the least impact on the surroundings.
